2007 Annual Report
![]() Removing tires from our home river gets us out in our boats on a sunny summer day. That’s always gravy. |
On behalf of the Nashwaak and Saint John Rivers, Nashwaaksis Stream and Regiment Creek, I extend thanks to all those folks who donated time and energy to the Tire-Free Rivers cause in 2007.
New records were set, both in individual and team efforts. Shore-side tire dumps were discovered in the middle of the city. New streams were explored, and valiant efforts were made to remove many tires.
Several times, muddy streams were walked, and crews were splashed with staining river bottom ooze. In one instance, a crew worked in choppy water and high winds, and faced down blood-sucking leeches. Yet they persevered, and filled their boat and truck with dozens of tires from the shore in one go.
We must not be daunted by the enormity of the task before us, nor by the indifference of those who do not share our devotion to the cause. Our efforts do not go unappreciated.
Our cause is noble and pure. Tomorrow, as we paddle on the stream, we and the stream will share a bond that goes deep and clear.
With every tire we remove from our rivers, our cause will go forward.
Besides, it gets us out in our boats on a sunny summer day. That’s always gravy.
